Mobility Aids

Mobility Aids to Support Safe and Independent Living

Mobility needs change over time, and the right support depends on the type of assistance needed. Some older adults need occasional balance support, while others may need additional stability outdoors, help managing fatigue, or support for longer distances.

The right mobility aid can provide added stability, reduce fatigue, and help older adults continue daily activities with greater confidence.

Below are mobility aids organized by level of support to help you identify options that may fit your current needs.

Products to Support You at Every Stage

Canes-regular-quad

Price: $30- $40

Brands: Honeybull and Hurrycane

Level 1: Light stability support – Canes

Canes are an effective aid for short distance and occasional imbalance.  Choosing the right cane depends on how much support is needed.

A standard cane works well for mild balance issues. It is lightweight, easy to carry, and appropriate for short distances.

A quad cane has a four-point base and provides significantly more stability. It stands on its own and is better suited for seniors with arthritis, leg weakness, or balance concerns.

HurryCane

Walking Poles and Walking stick

Level 2: Outdoor + longer walking support – Walking Sticks

Walking sticks and trekking poles can provide additional stability for outdoor environments such as grass, trails, gardens, or uneven pathways.

Some individuals prefer using two walking poles because they provide support on both sides and help distribute weight more evenly.

What to Look For:

  • Lightweight but sturdy construction
  • Non-slip rubber tips
  • Comfortable grip for arthritic hands
  • Wrist straps for added control

Cascade Mountain Tech Trekking Poles

Adjustable pair that provides excellent balance support

Brazos Hand Crafted walking Stick

Foldable Walkers

Price: $35 – $45

Level 3: Maximum Stability Support — Walkers

A walker provides a higher level of stability for individuals who need more support while standing and walking. It is often helpful for older adults experiencing balance concerns, leg weakness, or recovering from surgery or injury.

Proper sizing is important. Standard walkers are designed for average to taller adults, while petite or junior walkers may be better suited for individuals under approximately 5’4″. Using the wrong size can affect posture, comfort, and stability.

A properly fitted walker should allow the user to stand upright with a slight bend in the elbows, creating a natural and secure walking position.

What to Look For:

  • Height-adjustable frame for proper fit
  • Non-slip rubber feet for traction
  • Lightweight but sturdy construction
  • Foldable design for easy storage and transport

Level 4: Assisted walking + Fatigue Support – Rollator

Rollators provide more support than a cane or walking stick while allowing users to remain mobile and active.

They are especially helpful for individuals who experience fatigue, need occasional rest breaks, or want additional confidence when walking longer distances.

    What to Look For:

    • Built-in seat for resting
    • Easy-to-use hand brakes
    • Smooth-rolling wheels for indoor and outdoor use
    • Lightweight, foldable frame

A rollator often increases how far someone is willing to walk by reducing the fear of losing balance.
